Army Navy’s sunshiney yet melancholic guitars follow in a direct
line from The Zombies to Teenage Fanclub, with brief detours for The
Posies, Redd Kross, My Bloody Valentine, Blur and the like. They layer
heavy, distorted guitars, pounding rhythms and oh-so-sad and sweet vocal
melancholy into a new rock and roll bliss. Former NW resident/Pinwheel
co-frontman Justin Kennedy used to share vocal duties with Ben Gibbard
in that band.
Evoking three different branches of the pop family tree- the Beatles,
Queen and Radiohead- Oh Captain My Captain offer distinct vocals
and a gripping live show, this is a band with a knack for sonic
theatrics. The melody lines are unexpected and comforting while
the slight psychedelic choppiness of the instrumentation adds a
layer of drama and anxiousness to the songs on the band’s
ambitious debut. Oh Captain My Captain maintain a solid ground
in classic rock with all the proper updates and relevance.
