Built around the cataclysmic guitar squall of main man Oliver Ackermann, this Brooklyn-based trio has made a name for themselves as leaders of indie-rock's "loud is the new loud" aesthetic. Powered by effects pedals of Ackermann's own design (his hand-wired Death By Audio-brand stomp boxes, featuring names like Fuzz War and Total Sonic Annihilation, are quickly becoming de rigueur in any experimental bands' guitar arsenal), the threesome nods to hook-heavy noise-rock predecessors like the Jesus & Mary Chain, while further upping the ante in sonic mayhem. One listen to the trio's eponymous industrial-strength shoegazer debut, released in August 2007 on the Killer Pimp imprint, and you'll understand why APTBS was recently named "loudest band in New York."
